Frequently asked questions about ultrasound

Short information for patients before coming to the exam.

How does ultrasound diagnostics work?

The probe moved over the body emits high-frequency sound waves. It also acts as a receiver after the waves bounce off organs, then converts them into an electrical signal.

What does an ultrasound examination look like?

The exam is usually done lying down, occasionally sitting. A small amount of water-based gel is applied to the area being examined. The whole procedure takes 15–30 minutes.

Is ultrasound harmful?

A standard diagnostic ultrasound examination has no known harmful effects on people. Ultrasound is a non-invasive method that does not use ionizing radiation.

Is preparation needed for ultrasound?

No special preparation is needed except for abdominal ultrasound. It is best to come in comfortable clothes and bring previous findings or the referral from the doctor who requested the exam.
